Smith Ogden Passes to Great Beyond
Mrs. J. T. Ogden of this place passed to the Great Beyond Saturday. Sept
10, 1938, death being caused from cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services were
held Sunday morning at the Christian church of which she had been a member for
thirty years. Rev. S. E. Wilkin, a former pastor and one who had conducted the
funeral services for the husband, John T. Ogden,
twelve and one half years ago, conducted the services.
Honorary pall bearers were: J. C. Davis, J. T. Rhoton, Tom Vandergriff,
Dr. E. W. Burnett. Active pall bearers were C. L. Chastain, O. F. Godfrey, T. G.
Kelley, Roy McCormick, Louis Reed, E. H. Bishop. Rhoton's morticians. Burial at
Webb Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Ogden was Nellie Smith as a maiden and was born in Farmers Branch,
Texas, March 21, 1873, the daughter of Perry Smith and Nancy Jane Smith. After
marriage to John T. Ogden, they came to Carrollton in 1904 and he was engaged in
the grocery business for a number of years. Later they operated the hotel for
many years and Mrs. Ogden became well known thruout the entire territory for her
kindly hospitality and her excellent cuisine.
Five children survive: daughter, Mrs. Nannelle Connell; four sons; Othole,
Jim, H. D., and Raymond. Two sisters: Mrs. H. M. Ford and Mrs. Oscar Newton; one
brother Jim Smith.
