ALLEN -- A motorcyclist, identified as Tyler Owens, 22, of The Colony, was killed Tuesday night while allegedly fleeing from a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper.

At about 8:15 p.m., a DPS officer on routine patrol along the Sam Rayburn Tollway near Stacy Road in Allen observed a Yamaha motorcycle speeding northbound on the highway, DPS spokesman Lonny Haschel said.

The trooper intended to initiate a traffic stop and issue a warning, but when he activated his emergency lights the driver of the motorcycle elected not to stop and sped away from the trooper, Haschel said.

The trooper then turned off his emergency lights as the motorcycle continued to accelerate northbound. The motorcyclist continued to pull away, increasing his distance from the patrol vehicle and took the exit ramp to southbound U.S. Highway 75, at which point he lost control of the vehicle in the southbound curve of the ramp and struck the north concrete wall, Haschel said.

The motorcyclist was then ejected from the motorcycle and fell to the ground, where he was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Collin County Medical Examiner. Owens was wearing a helmet, Haschel said.

The crash remains under investigation.
