OBITUARY
 
DR. JACK PARTAIN
MAY 17, 1933 – AUG. 3, 2010

BOILING SPRINGS - Dr. Jack Partain, (Jackie Gene Partain), 77, 204 Gordon Ave., passed away of cancer on Aug. 3, 2010, at Wendover Hospice of Cleveland County.
Jackie Gene Partain was born to the late Charles Forris and Una Jean Partain on May 17, 1933, in Erath County, Texas. He graduated from Carrollton High School, Texas (1950), Baylor University (B.A., 1954), Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (B.Div., 1959), and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Th.D., 1983).
Jack married Ethel Ruth Lloyd on Aug. 6, 1955, in Austin, Texas. In 1962, they became Southern Baptist missionaries, and he taught at the Baptist Seminary, Arusha, Tanzania, from 1965 to 1978. The family returned to the U.S., in 1978. While completing his Th.D., he worked at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo. In 1983, Dr. Partain became professor of religious studies at Gardner-Webb University. He was awarded the Fleming-White Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1996. He retired in 1998, but remained active on campus as curator of the University's rose garden.
Dr. Partain was an active member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and renowned Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Boiling Springs Rotary Club (president, 1986-87, and a Paul Harris Fellow). He also was chairman of the Boiling Springs Precinct of the Cleveland County Democratic Party from 1995 to 2007. He served two terms on the NC Baptist Council of Christian Life and Public Affairs.
Dr. Partain is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Lloyd Partain; three sons: William Daniel Partain (Grace Semple) of Glasgow, Scotland, Eugene Charles Roehlkepartain (Jolene) of St. Louis Park, MN, and David Lloyd Partain of Linkoping, Sweden; five grandchildren: Micah, Linnea (Ned), Beatrice, Jonathan, and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother, Morris Partain (Sue), TX, and sister, Wynon Samuelson, ME; and brothers-in-law Ralph Lloyd Jr., AR, and Edwin Lloyd (Candy), MS; and three nephews, one niece, and countless caring friends and colleagues around the world.

Memorial Service: Saturday, Aug. 7, 2 p.m., Boiling Springs Baptist Church
