MEMORIAM by. Barbara (Dennis) Coop
It is with great sadness that I am posting the death of a classmate of
mine, Walter Wayne Phillips. Wayne graduated RLT in 1963. We were a part of the
first graduating class of RLT in 1963. Wayne had been married to my cousin,
Margie Nicholson Phillips and they had one son, Gary Wayne Phillips and Gary
Wayne is married to Christine, and they have two wonderful sons. Wayne passed
away on Thursday, June 10, 2021. His funeral will be this coming Wednesday, June
16, at 11 AM at Dallas North Funeral Home in Farmers Branch, TX with burial to
follow at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas. Wayne would have been 76 on June 25th
this year. Margie predeceased Wayne. My sweet Aunt, Bille Nicholson (Margie's
mother and Wayne's mother-in-law), called me today with this sad news and I
wanted to let all of Wayne's classmates know about this as he had many friends. |
OBITUARY
Phillips,
Walter Wayne
June 25, 1945 - June 11, 2021
Walter Wayne Phillips was born June 25, 1945 and he passed away
peacefully at home on June 11, 2021. Wayne is preceded in death by his
parents, William and Evelyn Phillips; his wife, Margaret Louise
Nicholson Phillips; and his three brothers William Phillips, Robert
Phillips and Ronald Phillips. Wayne is survived by his son, Gary Wayne
Phillips; daughter-in-law, Christine Burks Phillips; grandsons, Ryan
Alexander Phillips, age 15 and Jason Tyler Phillips, age 13; and his
mother-in-law, Billie Nicholson.
Wayne was born in Bakersfield, California to William Ray Phillips of
Pike County, Arkansas, and Evelyn Mabel Miller Phillips of Palisade,
Nebraska. Ray and Evelyn and their family moved to Little Elm in the
early 1950’s, where Wayne spent much time hunting and fishing in his
childhood. During his childhood and before starting school, Wayne
developed the nickname of “Doodle”; he did not realize that Doodle was
not his real name until he started school.
Wayne graduated from Carrollton High School, in Carrollton, Texas in
1963. After high school, he played baseball on the semi-pro level for a
few years. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the United States Army.
Upon honorable discharge from the Army, Wayne became a licensed
electrician, becoming self-employed, working on many buildings in the
Dallas area from the 1970’s until 1996, when he became employed by The
Home Depot.
He married Margaret Louise Nicholson on July 10, 1964 and they enjoyed
43 years of marriage and a wonderful family.
Wayne’s life had some sadness in it, in the loss of his father who
passed away at a young age, the passing of all three of his three
brothers, as well as, the passing of his mother and his wife on the same
day. But yet, through all of that, God’s grace was evident in his life.
Wayne knew and he understood the grace of Jesus Christ. He considered it
a great blessing from God to have the opportunity to care for his wife,
Margaret, as she lay captive to COPD in the later years of her life.
Wayne was able to work and, at the same time, care for her at home until
she went to meet her Lord February 22, 2007.
Wayne was a member of The Northway Church of Dallas, Texas. He was
service oriented. He served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many
years. Many times, he found himself in personal service to others using
his experience as an electrician. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
#395 in Farmers Branch. On his daily walk around Farmers Branch he
talked with people about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
While it has been said of some others, it is no less true for Wayne,
that he went to sleep on this earth and he woke up in heaven. He never
thought of heaven as a place, but more to the point, it is where God is.
He readily understood that there would be no fluffy clouds to float on,
while playing some kind of harp, but work. There would much work to be
done in timeless, eternal, glorious celebration and praise of God, the
Father and Jesus Christ, the Son.
Services will be held at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View
Lane, Dallas, TX 75234 – a visitation will be on Tuesday, June 15, 2021
from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, June
16, 2021 at 11:00 am. Graveside service will follow at 1:00 pm at Grove
Hill Cemetery, Samuels Blvd., Dallas, Texas. |
