OBITUARY
Ellouise Chastain Reed
Ellouise Chastain Reed, a retired bookkeeper, died Saturday morning of kidney
failure at her Dallas home. She was 86.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church of
Carrollton, 1835 Walnut St.
Born in Tyler, Mrs. Reed graduated from Carrollton High School, now R. L. Turner
High School, in 1933. She attended business school before beginning a 45-year
career as a bookkeeper. She became regional controller for B.F. Goodrich Co.
before getting married and moving to Oregon.
She and her family returned to Dallas 10 years later, where she kept the general
ledger for Baifield Industries and the Matthews brothers' construction company.
Mrs. Reed was also a devoted mother, said her daughter, Lois Reed, a Dallas
Morning News editor.
"We didn't know it at the time, but she was one of the early supermoms, giving
as much time to her kids' activities as possible," her daughter said.
Ellouise Reed was a life member of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch PTA and a
member of the Peters Colony Historical Society. She was a lifelong member of the
First Christian Church in Carrollton. She belonged to the Carrollton Business &
Professional Women's Club, where she had served as president and was once named
Woman of the Year.
She was an all-around sports fan, faithfully rooting for teams from the R. L.
Turner Lions to Texas Christian University as well as the area's professional
teams.
"She wasn't a fair-weather fan, and she wasn't just a spectator," Lois Reed
said.
Mrs. Reed was known for her piano playing when she was young. She also loved to
bowl and played in leagues for many years. Her husband, Ernest David Reed, died
in 1985.
In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Reed is survived by a son, David Charles Reed
of Montrose, Colo.
