Police: Carrollton man killed intervening in argument in Dallas, police said
STAR-TELEGRAM

A Carollton man was shot to death while trying to intervene in an argument Monday evening in the parking lot of fast food restaurant in northwest Dallas, police said.

Leonard Richardson, 27, was pronounced dead 7:15 p.m. outside the Dairy Queen near the intersection of Rosemeade Parkway and Marsh Lane, according to reports. The area is in the portion of Dallas that is in Denton County.

Richardson, who was with at least three other people, arrived at the restaurant where they parked their vehicle, said Sgt. Gene Reyes, Dallas homicide detective.

That group, he added, planned to walk to a nearby apartment complex to go swimming, Reyes said.

Richardson, however, noticed another group of people arguing in the parking lot and he intervened, Reyes said.

"I guess he didn't like the way they were carrying on," Reyes said.

But members of the group turned on Richardson and started beating him, Reyes said.

"Then someone pulls a gun and shoots him," the detective said.

Richardson was shot in the head and chest, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office, which handles cases from Denton County.

Several witnesses were interviewed by detectives, who heard more than one interpretation of what happened, Reyes said.

"Our story is a lot clearer now," Reyes said Tuesday morning.

Reyes, at 2:30 p.m., said detectives had developed a photo line up of a possible suspect, which was being shown to witnesses, but no arrest was reported

Homicide outside Carrollton Dairy Queen falls in Dallas' jurisdiction

What a difference a few feet can make for police.

My cops-beat colleague Scott Goldstein reported in today's paper that Leonard Hugh Richardson was shot to death Monday night while trying to break up a fight in a Dairy Queen parking lot in the 3400 block of Rosemeade Parkway. The 27-year-old victim's mother watched the attack unfold, police said.

The Dairy Queen's address is in Carrollton, but Dallas police are working the homicide because the parking lot is considered their jurisdiction. A detective told Scott the shooting happened just inside Dallas' city limits -- sparing Carrollton its fourth homicide of the year (the third happened Friday).

While Dallas police say the area has been problematic, that was news to Carrollton police.

"For us, it's a fairly quiet neighborhood," said Dustin Bartram, a Carrollton police spokesman.

Anyone with information about the slaying is asked to call Dallas police at 214-671-3661 or e-mail the homicide unit.

Dallas Dairy Queen Shooting Victim Identified

Police have identified the victim of a deadly shooting at a Carrollton Dairy Queen Restaurant on May 25th.

According to officials, 27-year-old Leonard Richardson of Dallas was gunned down in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen in the 3400 block of Rosemeade Parkway.

The restaurant will be closed until Friday and counselors were brought in to talk with staff. Tuesday the Roundtable Corporation, an independently owned Dairy Queen® franchisee, issued a statement that said, in part, "Our restaurant will be temporarily closed as we install increased security measures and counsel with employees. We are very proud of the brave and professional manner in which our employees handled the unfortunate incident, and for their assistance to law enforcement officers in their investigation."

Police believe as many as 10 people, including Richardson, were involved in a physical confrontation around 7:30 pm and that sometime during or after the fight several shots were fired. At the crime scene, shell casing markers indicated at least 10 shots had been fired.

Tuesday Dairy Queen management confirmed that there are video surveillance cameras inside the restaurant, but none outside.

Detectives don't believe Richardson knew his killers and say there was no evidence the victim was robbed. Witnesses to the crime told police that after the shooting four people ran from the scene into a nearby apartment complex.

Police are said to have good leads in the case and a possible shooting suspect in mind, but so far no arrests have been made.
