Virginia Ailleen Cain Hunt-Royal was born in Harmon County, Oklahoma on June 8, 1932, to Lee Roy Cain and Bertie Hightower Cain. She passed away peacefully on August 27, 2017 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 85 years. She was the youngest of 13, with 3 older brothers, 5 older sisters, and 4 siblings who died as infants. As the daughter of a sharecropping farmer, she grew up picking cotton and lived in various places in the panhandle around Hollis, Oklahoma and Dodson, Texas. She was baptized as a teenager after a gospel meeting in Dodson, Texas at the Wellington Church of Christ. She was very involved at Dodson High School in basketball, volleyball, glee club, FHA, 4-H club, and dramatic productions. She served on the annual staff all four years, was Editor her senior year, elected Best All-round Girl for citizenship, scholarship, and participation, and graduated as Valedictorian in 1950.
It was also in high school where she met the love of her life, Dale Hunt, and they wasted no time getting married. After a year in Lubbock, where Dale attended Texas Tech, they moved to Dallas. In 1953, they were blessed with their only daughter, Cindy, and Virginia loved dressing her up for all occasions. Even through High School at R. L. Turner, Virginia sewed all of Cindy’s costumes for every show she performed in. After a brief time living in Lockney, Texas, where Dale worked as a farmhand, in 1961 they moved back to Dallas and ended up in Farmers Branch, where Virginia was a resident for over 50 years. In the early 70’s she worked as a bookkeeper, helping put both Dale and Cindy through college. She worked at Glidden Paint, the J. D. Martin Company, Braniff Airlines, and retired with the USDA. Dale, Virginia, and Cindy were a vital part of the Farmers Branch Church of Christ, where Dale served as both a Deacon and Elder. In 1981, Cindy and David met and got married, and in early 1982, her beloved Dale passed away with lung cancer at the age of 49 years.
Later that same year, she was blessed with Dustin Dale, the first of three grandchildren, followed by Micah David in 1983, and Brittany Anne in 1985. Her grandkids were the pride of her life. In 1984, she married Ray Royal and they moved to Gordonville, Texas near Lake Texoma. For a number of years, she enjoyed quilting and travelling. When the grandkids would visit, Granny would always fry catfish that Ray had caught in the lake. She moved back to Farmers Branch after Ray passed away in 2000, and began attending the Webb Chapel Church of Christ.
Ever industrious, she opened an antique dealership called “Granny-N-Us” that operated out of The Finishing Touch store in downtown Carrollton.
A three-time cancer survivor, Virginia was strong, tough, and feisty. She was a seamstress and excellent quilt-maker, loved to shop at Neiman Marcus, a member of the Red Hat Society, and the loudest and most dedicated basketball fan. She never passed up an opportunity to speak to strangers.
Virginia is preceded in death by her father, Lee Roy Cain; mother, Bertie Hightower Cain; brothers, Otis and Odell; sisters, Opal, Mildred, Cleo, Juanita, and Elsie May; husbands, Dale Hunt and Ray Royal.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy and husband, David Moore, of Farmers Branch, Texas; brother, Leonard Cain of Plano, Texas; grandson, Dustin and wife, Emily Moore, of Carrollton, Texas; grandson, Micah and wife, Angela Moore, of Richardson, Texas; grand-daughter, Brittany of Farmers Branch, Texas; great-grandchildren, Elijah and June Moore, and one on the way; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Hunt and Marilyn Garton; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
The family will be receiving visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in the Brooks Family Chapel of the North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.
Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at The Branch, 3035 Valley View Lane, Dallas, Texas 75234.
Interment will be a Keenan Cemetery at 2570 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, Texas 75234.
