Gerald D. Scharlau
Former Durango resident Gerald “Jerry” D. Scharlau died after a two-year
battle with cancer of the esophagus Monday, March 7, 2011, in Justin, Texas. He
was 62.
Always known as “Jerry,” both in his business and personal life, he was born to
Roy and Rose Scharlau on April 8, 1948, in Lombard, Ill. He earned his Bachelor
of Business from Western Illinois University and his Master of Science, while in
the Navy, from the University of Arkansas.
After graduating from Western Illinois in 1970, Mr. Scharlau spent the next
eight years as a pilot in the Navy. In 1978, he separated from the Navy and
moved to Dallas to fly with Braniff Airlines. After Braniff’s bankruptcy, Mr.
Scharlau transitioned into the financial industry as a financial consultant with
Shearson Lehman Bros. in Dallas before transferring to A.G. Edwards & Sons,
Inc., in Durango. He spent almost 15 years as a financial consultant with A.G.
Edwards here.
Mr. Scharlau was preceded in death by his youngest son,
David Scharlau, in 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Jerri Scharlau, of Justin, Texas; son Bryan Scharlau
of Grand Prairie, Texas; stepchildren Shannon Wilson of Bayfield, Mark Hopkins
of Euless, Texas, and Scott Hopkins of Justin; eight grandchildren; and
one-great grandchild.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 12, 2011, at
Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 740 S. Edmonds Lane in Lewisville, Texas. A graveside
service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2011, in the plot next to
his son David at Furneaux Cemetery
in Carrollton, Texas. |
