Mel
Arthur Schraufnagel, 64, of Farmers Branch, Texas passed away on May 22,
2024.
Mel was born in Dallas, Texas to Loretta and Bill Schraufnagel on
November 6, 1959. He was married to Kathleen Kelleher McCauley on
October 5, 1985 and they had 38 wonderful years together until his
death. He was a devoted stepfather and loved his boys dearly. The Boy
Scouts of America were a special love of his and not only was he a Scout
growing up, but he was a Scout Leader for his children and grandson. An
avid soccer player in his youth, Mel at one point had the opportunity to
train with world-renowned soccer player, Pelé. He was instrumental in
coaching Mary Immaculate youth soccer in the 1980's. He was also an avid
gardener and he made delicious tomato sauces and sauerkraut, among other
things, with the vegetables he grew.
Mel and his family, as well as his wife Kathleen and her family, grew up
in the Catholic Community of Mary Immaculate and have served in many
volunteer roles over the years. Mel was a member of Knights of Columbus
/ Fr Emil Platte CO 5052, first as a Squire when he was young and then a
full-fledged member as an adult. He later became a 4th Degree Knight as
a member of the Notre Dame Assembly 2144.
Mel originally joined the staff of Mary Immaculate for a few years in
the 1980's as an assistant to the Facilities Manager. He then continued
serving the community at Cistercian Preparatory School as their
Facilities Manager for almost 20 years, before his return in 2008 to
assume that role for Mary Immaculate. He took special pride in knowing
each nook, creak and cranny of the Church and School facilities. Mel
dedicated some of his finest years of service and excellence to Mary
Immaculate Church and School and his work ethic and devotion to the
community made him a treasure to all.
Mel is preceded in death by his father, William Schraufnagel, his
father-in-law Thomas Kelleher and mother-in-law Jacqueline Kelleher, and
his sister-in-law Vicki Kelleher.
Mel is survived by his wife Kathleen and his stepsons, Vaughn and Quinn
McCauley along with his Grandson, Gage McCauley and his mother, Loretta
Schraufnagel. He is also survived by his siblings, Cary, Joe, Tony,
Angela, and Rose and their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews.
