OBITUARY

Brandon Alexander Self, 18, of Carrollton, Texas, passed away Monday, November 13, 2017, due to chronic respiratory issues. Brandon was born on May 15, 1999 in Dallas, Texas, to Divina and Durke Self. Brandon was very premature, but overcame many health obstacles to become a sweet, funny, inquisitive and even chubby toddler.
As a child, Brandon was fascinated by robots, Transformers, and video games like Twisted Metal and MarioKart. As he got older, his passions included Dr. Who and encyclopedic knowledge of the Star Wars universe. Brandon had a passion for music and was obsessed with bands like Gorillaz, The Prodigy, Prince, Queen, and The Beatles.
He spent hours creating his own special mixes of his favorite artists. Brandon also loved creating his own animations and drawings, often featuring characters from Big Hero 6 or Gorillaz. Brandon was a 2017 graduate of R.L.
Turner High School. He was an enthusiastic and beloved Lion Keeper, who helped pump up the crowd at football games and pep rallies with his crazy, but seriously impressive dance moves. He was a proud member of METSA (Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, and Science Academy).
Brandon was excelling in his first year at Brookhaven College, and was honored with multiple college scholarships. His goal was a degree in 3D Graphic Design in Animation, drawing on his passion for graphics and animation. Brandon was a life-long member of Mary Immaculate Catholic Church in Farmers Branch, and taught Religious Education to Pre-K children.
He volunteered many of his Saturdays with MetroCrest Services and Christ 4 Kids Sack Summer Hunger, where he assembled and delivered meals to children in need. Brandon also volunteered and worked a summer at Christ 4 Kids Preschool at Christ United Methodist Church, Farmers Branch. Brandon is survived by his parents, Divina and Durke Self of Carrollton, Texas; grandparents Irene and Roberto Prado of Joshua, Texas, and Sylvia and Harry Young of Arlington, Texas; siblings Julian, Bella, and Lauren Self of Carrollton; aunt Rachel Baker; and uncles Robert Prado, Marcos Prado, and Darrell Self.

Brandon Self was taken from us too early. Although he faced difficulties in life most of us cannot comprehend, it forged him into a kind, intelligent person. He loved sharing his passions with everyone he could and you couldn't help but be swept up with his enthusiasm from his love of Big Hero 6, to his wonderfully realistic video game creations and his expansive knowledge of the Star Wars universe. He brought his joy of life with him everywhere and shared it with everyone. The world is poorer for his loss.

Brandon recently graduated from R L Turner High school and was attending college at Brookhaven College with the intention of a degree in graphic design. Having seen some of the video games he created, there is no doubt the career would have suited him.

The day of November 13 started like any other day until any parent's nightmare became reality and Brandon was suddenly gone. While we know he is in a better place, a parent can never plan for the loss of their child. In this devastating time for them, we are asking for any assistance you can spare in order to make this unplanned and unwelcome event one that will honor the way Brandon lived and give his parents the closure they need.

Thank you so much for the outpouring of support so far. It seems Brandon has touched so many lives in his time here. For those wanting to attend his services:
