George Roscoe, Smith Jr., 91, passed away on August 23, 2009 in Irving, TX. He was born on February 24, 1918 to George, Sr., & Eva (Pollock) Smith in Beaver, Iowa. He was a graduate of Marius High School in Marius, N.Y., and attended Central City Business Institute in Syracuse, NY. George was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Marine Corp. He was a gunner on a plane that was shot down in the South Pacific near the Bougainville Island during a night raid. He and his fellow soldiers survived for 3 days in a raft boat off of sea birds that he shot and killed. George was a retired business manager for Gaston Oaks Baptist Church where he also was a longtime deacon and member of the choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith (Kermit) Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne Maitland and husband, Bill of Irving, TX., four grandchildren, Cara McCallum of Austin, TX., Tracy Maitland Chapa of Irving, TX., Tiffany Nance and Donovan Smith, four great grandchildren and two sisters, Eloise Mohan and Betty Flough of Florida. Graveside services will be Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 11:00am at Furneaux Cemetery in Carrollton, TX
