Pauline Mitchell Keeton Smith

Smith, Pauline Mitchell Keeton Pauline Mitchell Keeton Smith passed away in Dallas, Texas, on June 2, 2011, at the age of 103. She was born in Bonham, Texas, on December 17, 1907, to Annie Elizabeth Mitchell Keeton and William Fount Keeton. She graduated from Bonham High School as its Salutatorian in 1924 and received her BA degree Cum Laude from The University of Texas in 1928. She taught Spanish and English in the public schools of Texas, including ones in Floydada, McAllen, Denison, Temple and Carrollton-Farmers Branch, for 22 years before taking early retirement in 1964. At the First Presbyterian Church in Bonham, Texas, on September 6, 1935, Pauline married fellow educator, Newman Smith. They were married for 58 years until he preceded her in death in 1994. The Pauline Keeton Smith Performing Arts Theatre at Newman Smith High School in Carrollton was named in her honor. Pauline and Newman were active members of Covenant Presbyterian Church, now Faith United Presbyterian Church, where both served as an elder. She was also active in women's work at Covenant. After their retirement they traveled extensively throughout the world. In addition to her husband, Pauline was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Annie Mae Etter, Sondheim Webb and Mary Alice Lively. She is survived by her daughter Linda Smith Howell and husband Harold of Colleyville; her son Newman Smith, Jr. and wife Diane of Scottsdale, AZ; her granddaughter Beth Semadeni and husband Ray of Southlake; her grandson Bill Howell and wife Kristen of Dallas; her great-grandchildren Allison, Caroline and Will Semadeni and Katherine and Libby Howell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Burial will be at Restland Cemetery Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Garden of Mt. Vernon. A Memorial service celebrating Pauline's life will be held at Faith United Presbyterian Church (Formerly Ridgeview), 12717 Marsh Lane, Dallas, TX 75234 Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Faith United Presbyterian Church.
