OBITUARY

Death of Pioneer Family Member

Ruth Hughes Taylor
February 26, 1924 - April 13, 2009

Ruth was a true native Carrollton, Texan. Her parents' families were early settlers in this area. Ruth's father, George Hughes, owned a farm at what is now Josey and Trinity Mills and a grocery store in downtown Carrollton. Her mother, Mable Miller, was from Greene County, Illinois.

In 1930 George Hughes built a fine brick home for about $5,000 near downtown Carrollton so "Little Ruthie" wouldn't have to ride the bus to school. In seventh or eighth grade, Ruth was a member of the first band in a Carrollton School, and continued to participate through Carrollton High School and college. She was the first female member of the North Texas State College Band in Denton.

After college, Ruth worked at Westinghouse Electrical Supply Company and Engineering & Manufacturing Corporation of Texas (later Baifield Industries). In 1955 Ruth married Weldon Taylor at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Fred White officiating. The couple adopted seven-year-old twin girls, Sharon & Karen in 1962. In 1966 their son, Ronald, was born.

Ruth was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church Carrollton, serving as a Sunday School teacher, Training Union positions, and Girls Auxiliary. Ruth and her husband, Weldon, donated three acres for the First Baptist Church building on Josey Lane. Previous memberships included Morning Garden Club, Women's Study Club (now Carrollton Womens' Club), Beta Sigma Phi, Peters Colony Historical Society (Charter Member).

Ruth is survived by husband, Weldon, daughters, Karen Husfelt and Sharon Johnson, son, Ronald and their families.

Due to age and declining health, Ruth and Weldon moved to Florida to be near son, Ron, and his wife, Colleen. A graveside service was held in Dunedin, Florida on April 22, 2009. On May 9, 2009 at 10:30 a Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church Carrollton.
