Carrollton Names Mayor Pro Tem

CARROLLTON, Texas - W. J. Thomas was named mayor protem to succeed former city councilman, Gene Biggerstaff who did not seek re-election in the April 2 balloting. Thomas also will continue as street commissioner, Mayor Walter Blanton announced.
Newly-elected Councilman Eric Weigand was named commissioner of finance and chairman of the city recreation committee, two posts formerly held by Thomas.
Other council assignments are Robert J. McInnish, fire commissioner; L. D. Smith, police, and Ward Steenson, park commissioner.

Ex-councilman elected mayor of Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Texas - Former city councilman W. J. Thomas was elected mayor of Carrollton Saturday.

He defeated Douglas R. Lehmann by a vote of 318-59, with six write-in votes for Mayor Pro Tem David Claterbaugh.

The special election was called to fill the post which was vacated when Mayor Tommy Standridge died earlier this year.

OBITUARY

Funeral set for ex-mayor of Carrollton

CARROLLTON - Funeral services for William James Thomas, 64, of 1524 Shannon Place, former Carrollton mayor and city council member and retired president of W. J. Thomas Co., Inc., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Carrollton First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.
He died Tuesday in a Dallas hospital.
Thomas was elected in 1975 to fill the last year of the term of Mayor Tommy Standridge, who died while in office.
Prior to his election as mayor, the construction company owner had served as Carrollton City Council member for 16 years.
He was a native of Murry County, Tenn., and had lived in Carrollton for 48 years.
Thomas retired as president of W. J. Thomas Co. Inc. in 1977. He founded the highline construction company in 1945.
He was a member of Carrollton First United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the board of directors of First Bank and Trust of Carrollton.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Julia; three daughters, Mrs. Judy Scamardo, Mrs. Debbie Haney and Mrs. Don Pitts; a son, William James Thomas Jr.; a half-brother, Tom Stewart, and five grandchildren.
