OBITUARY

Rites held for ex-News employee Earl Tibbetts

Services were Monday in Carrollton for former Dallas Morning News employee Earl Wayne Tibbetts.

Mr. Tibbetts, 56, died Thursday of liver disease at Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he had been hospitalized since March 7. He was buried in Furneaux Cemetery in Carrollton.

Mr. Tibbetts, who was awaiting a liver transplant, had been hospitalized 12 times in the last year, said his wife, Kay Tibbetts of Victoria, Texas. She plans to work for organ donor education when she returns to Victoria.

"There's so little known about liver disease, the treatment and transplants," she said. "If there were more donors, this wouldn't have to happen."

Mr. Tibbetts was born in Dallas, where he attended Crozier Tech High School.

In 1965, he went to work in the distribution department of The News , his wife said. Mr. Tibbetts left the paper in 1969 but returned in 1970. After a total of 13 years at The News , he left the newspaper to become a supervisor in the distribution center at the Dallas Times Herald.

When the Times Herald stopped publishing in 1991, Mr. Tibbetts joined the Victoria Advocate , where he was a mail room supervisor. He had been on medical leave since July but worked occasionally until Oct. 1.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Tibbetts is survived by a son, Tony Tibbetts of Carrollton; five daughters, Pam Reedy of Lincolnton, N.C., Natilee Hall of Durant, Okla., Marsha Johnson of Spring, Texas, Sallie Bailey of Granbury, Texas, and Mary Tibbetts of Victoria; his mother, Mary Goodman of Grapevine; a sister, Ernestine McClure of Carrollton; and 14 grandchildren.

The Texas flag in front of The Dallas Morning News will fly at half staff on Tuesday in memory of Earl Wayne Tibbetts.
