OBITUARY

Joe M. Valdez, Village Blacksmith, Dies On Monday

Joe M. Valdez, 59, born March 21, 1886 in Austin, died Monday afternoon at 1:30 at a Dallas hospital, following a long illness and three years of bad health.
Until his retirement, due to his physical condition, two years ago, Mr. Valdez operated the Valdez Blacksmith, located in the building between his home on Broadway and the Homer E. Clayton Motor Company. He had worked 18 years in Dallas for Moser Steel company before opening his business here and had worked for himself two years before moving to Carrollton. His father, the late John Valdez, also had been a blacksmith, operating a shop in Austin.
Since early in his career here he was known at "The Village Blacksmith," a jokester starting it, and others carrying it on until Mr. Valdez painted the slogan on his truck, generally going by that name.
Mr. Valdez had been in the blacksmith business here eight years, retiring in September of '43 because of illness. He and his family have lived here also <??> years, moving two years after he opened the business and buying the house next door to the shop.
He remodeled his home, adding another story and decorating it with ornamental iron work.
Mr. Valdez did beautiful work. He made the ornamental iron archway at the Josey Rancho, as well as a swing, fire screen and <??> andirons and fireplace too. He also made the andirons and screen for R. B. George Glad Acres farm and andirons and fireplace tools for G. E. Hubbard as well as the ornamental lamps on the entrance pillars. He had done work for many other estates and individuals in and round Carrollton and Dallas.
He was a member of the Oddfellow Lodge since he was young and belong to Lodge No. 44 in Dallas, later transferring to the Farmers Branch lodge, after he came to Carrollton. Oddfellows had charge of services at the cemetery.
He was also a member of the Carrollton Lions club and Lions were selected for his pallbearers. They were; Walter Blanton, C. W. Ramsy, Joe Stout, Burnett Perry, E. H. Bishop, and A. R. Lowery.
Mr. Valdez was taken to the hospital on Wednesday of last week.
His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at 3 at the Methodist church, Rev. Felix R. Kindel of Lakewood Methodist, Dallas, having charge, assisted by Rev. Robert Ridley. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Burial was made at Grove Hill near Buckners, Rhoton's in charge.
Mr. Valdez is survived by his wife and one son Johnnie; two sisters, Mrs. D. R. San Migual of Houston and Mrs.. A. J. Rios of El Paso. Both of them were here, Mrs. San Migual arriving over a week before his death and remaining until Wednesday and Mrs. Rios leaving Thursday for her home in El Paso.
