OBITUARY RUTH MASON VERNON
RUTH MASON VERNON died June 24th at the age of 94 in Prairie Village, Kansas.
She was born near Deport, Texas, graduated from Paris Texas Junior College,
Texas Women's College, Denton, Texas, and earned an MA degree in Comparative
Literature from SMU. She had a long career as an elementary school teacher in
Texas and Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, the
Reverend Dr.
Walter N. Vernon, Jr. a member of the North Texas United Methodist Conference,
former pastor of Lakewood United Methodist Church in Dallas, editor and writer
for Methodist church school publications in Nashville, Tennessee, church
historian, and author of many books on Methodist history in Texas, Arkansas,
Louisiana, on Black history, and Native American Methodist history. She is
survived by her son, Walter N. Vernon, III and his wife, Barbara, of Prairie
Village, Kansas; her daughter, Kathy Vernon Clark and her husband, Stanley, of
Decatur, Alabama; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces
and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Milton Guiterrez and
the Rev. Stanley P. Clark at 2 PM Monday, June 29th at Lakewood United Methodist
Church (2443 Abrams Road) in Dallas with burial at
Furneaux Cemetery in
Carrollton, TX. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM at the church. Pallbearers
will be grandchildren Walter Vernon IV, Eric Vernon, Dr. Alex Vernon, Marty
Clark, Jennifer Clark, and nephews Frank Mason Bean and Jim Nyfeler. The family
requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Lakewood United Methodist
Church.
