OBITUARY
Washburn,
Joanne Daniel
September 26, 1942 - February 24, 2018
Joanne Daniel Washburn was born in Greenville, TX on September 26, 1942
to Frank and Lottie Daniel. She left this earth on February 24, 2018
following a 23-month battle with brain cancer.
A life-long learner, Joanne attended McKinney High School and East Texas
State University, where she studied to become a teacher. She was beloved
in the classroom, whether she was teaching business education to high
school students at R.L. Turner High School or sharing her love of
reading with elementary students in Wylie ISD.
While at East Texas State, Joanne was active in Chi Omega and worked for
the bursar’s office. It was there that she met John Alexander, who she
married in 1964. “Jody,” as she’d been nicknamed, was honored at East
Texas by being named Kappa Alpha Rose. Following graduation, Joanne and
John moved to Dallas, TX where they had two daughters, Kelly & Amy. They
later moved to Canyon Creek in Richardson.
A dedicated mother, Joanne was a regular room mom and volunteer for her
daughters as she raised them in Richardson, TX. As they grew, she
discovered tennis, and became a passionate tennis player at Canyon Creek
Country Club, often playing 4-6 hours a day.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Joanne worked in the insurance industry,
for both The Hartford Companies and for Noel, Graves & Strother. Her
quick mind and compassionate heart made her a strong, successful team
member.
In 1988, Joanne remarried, and celebrated new love with Bob Washburn.
Together, they cherished fun times playing cards and games, pampering
their dogs Peaches and Lexi and feeding ducks and squirrels at their
lake house on Lake Cypress Springs.
In 1995, they moved back to the DFW area to be closer to their families,
and settled in Wylie, Texas. It was there that Joanne returned to the
classroom, and loved sharing stories with elementary aged students, many
of whom she kept up with even as they graduated from high school. Joanne
loved being able to spend time with her grandchildren and ‘grand-dogs,’
and often hosted Camp Meme for both.
Her beloved Bob passed away in 2008, and Joanne found solace in her
activities at Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church including Groan-Ups,
bridge groups and lunches with friends. She developed a love of travel,
and took amazing trips with her sister Linda to Hawaii, Alaska, Ireland,
Scotland and England.
Joanne will be welcomed into heaven by her parents, Frank and Lottie
Daniel, her husband Robert Washburn and step-daughter Robin Sutton. She
is survived by her siblings, Linda Brooks and Frank Daniel, children,
Kelly Alexander Hunter (John), Amy Michelle Maher (Jamey) and
step-daughter Ronda Salzgeber (Jay), her grandchildren, Chandler and
Reagan Hunter, Aidan and Delaney Maher, Shay Salzgeber and Robert
Sutton, and great-grandchildren Isabella Salzgeber and Grace and Robin
Sutton.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 P.M., Thursday,
March 1, 2018 at Canyon Creek Presbyterian Church located at 3901
Northstar Road, Richardson, Texas 75082, with a reception following the
service.
