PORT ISABEL, Texas -- A 23-year-old Dallas
student, on spring break in South Texas, was killed
early Thursday in a head-on collision.
Steven Wayne Wright was dead at the accident scene four miles southwest of Port Isabel on Texas Highway 48, the road to Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico, officials said. The route is heavily traveled by college students during spring break on South Padre Island.
The crash occurred at about 12:50 a.m.
Four 19-year-old Edinburg men in another car were injured, Department of Public Safety troopers said. Daniel Perez was treated at Valley Regional Hospital and released. Listed in stable condition at the hospital Thursday evening were Michael Guzman, Javier Melchor and Xavier Castellano.
A total of about 250,000 students are expected on South Padre Island this year over a six-week period. An estimated 75,000 young people were vacationing on the island this week with several Texas schools out.
"There are kids coming in here that don't have any place to stay, and we're having trouble finding places for them,' said Breeze Carlile, executive director of the South Padre Island visitor and convention bureau.
Some who traveled from other states complained about coming so far for winds up to 20 mph and temperatures that did not reach the 70s until Wednesday afternoon.
