THE HISTORY OF CARROLLTON CHRISTIAN
ACADEMY
In the fall of 1980, Carrollton Christian Academy (then known as the
Sonshine Christian School) opened its doors for the first time with
twenty-seven three- and four-year-old preschoolers and four teachers. The
following year pre-kindergarten was offered for children who would benefit
from another year of maturing before entering kindergarten. (This was the
first class of its kind in the area.) Preschool grew rapidly to meet the
needs of the community and today enrolls approximately 54 students, offering
several different schedules to families with three- and four-year-olds and
Pre-K students. Kindergarten was begun in 1982 with eight students. Today
our kindergarten program offers two full-day classes and one full-day
pre-kindergarten class.
Enrollment literally exploded over the next fifteen years. In 1984, the
school was incorporated and the name was changed from Sonshine Christian
School to Carrollton Christian Academy. A school board was formed, and the
elementary school began with seventeen little first graders. One, and
sometimes two, grade levels were added each year until the elementary school
was complete, and the need to expand into middle school was evident. In
1988, Carrollton Christian Academy had 430 students, preschool through
seventh grade, and two years later had an enrollment of 610 when CCA took
the plunge into high school. The first class of twelve seniors graduated in
1994.
Carrollton Christian Academy became a member of the ACSI in 1985, and
received its accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools in 1991. The demand for quality education in a safe environment is
reflected in the number of enrollment inquiries received each year. Families
have made telephone inquiries from nearly every state in the continental
United States and from as far away as England, Indonesia, Japan, China, and
South Korea.
In addition to student growth, Carrollton Christian Academy has added new
facilities and many departments and programs to offer the student body a
well-rounded extracurricular and academic experience. The athletic program
offers sixth through twelfth grade students a wide range of athletic
opportunities including basketball, football, softball, baseball, golf,
tennis, cross country, and track and field. Fine arts programs now include
choir, vocal ensemble, band, orchestra, drama, speech, journalism, and art.
The academic program is a college-prep curriculum, and approximately 99% of
CCA graduates attend college at all of the major universities in Texas and
out-of-state schools.
Students in all grade levels of Carrollton Christian Academy score
consistently high on national standardized tests and achieve superior honors
in ASCI competitions. The Stanford Achievement Test rates CCA students near
the 88th percentile among all private school students. National Merit
Finalists and Honors Program students have ranked among the graduating
classes.
Carrollton Christian Academy has been featured in the Dallas Morning News as
one of the fastest growing, best value schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth
metroplex. Tuition rates are extremely competitive, and need-based financial
assistance is available. Carrollton Christian Academy is not just about
growth but rather building future leaders through Christ-centered academics,
arts, and athletics, who choose character before career, wisdom beyond
scholarship, service before self, and participation as a way of life.
