Last night's school board meeting wasn't all business; there were moments of levity as well.

After the district recognized its latest crop of Very Important Profession of Teaching honorees, teachers whose work has distinguished them among their peers, there was a video presentation on the origins of R.L. Turner High's signature lion statues.

The stone lions were moved to the school in the 1990s from their original home: the old Josey Ranch property.

"Back in the day, the Josey family lived in the home, and they had several sculptures around the house," said Vince Cowdrey, director of Turner's Academy for Media Arts and Technology at Turner. "We just happened to notice two lion sculptures out in front of the house after the had moved away."

But getting permission to take the lions was just the start. Moving them to Turner was far more difficult.

"These suckers would not budge," said Vice Principal Russ Wisener, who volunteered his 1980 Nissan pickup for the job.

In the end, school officials got a lift from a crane used to move crypts at Perry Cemetery. Wisener's pickup almost wasn't up to the task.

"My truck, it was hurtin' ... because those things were heavy," Wisener said
