Orders RLT Married Student to Be Reinstated
District Judge Owen Giles last Thursday ordered the
Carrollton-Farmers Branch District for the second time to permit a
married student to enter R. L. Turner High School.
Board president W. R. Linn was found in contempt of court for suspending
Mrs. Tex Lloyd (Sallye) Knight, 18, against injunction orders and fined
Linn $100 and sentenced him to three days in jail, but indicated he may
not order the punishment executed if the young woman is permitted to
reenter the school.
Mrs. Knight was permitted to reenter the school on Friday and she
attended classes.
Mrs. Knight and her 17-year old husband were first suspended Jan. 18,
two days after their marriage. Judge Giles ordered them reinstated on a
restraining order and later granted an injunction against the school
board and instructed the board to set aside its policy of suspending
married students for a three-week period after marriage.
Knight has attended school only a few times since the original court
action, his young wife said. She indicated he plans to leave Turner High
and attend a trade school.
Following the initial court action, the school board appealed Judge
Giles opinion to a higher court. The appeal is still pending.
