IN REMEMBRANCE
STEVE ADAIR, 57, a lifelong resident of Carrollton/Farmers Branch and North
Dallas, died Sunday morning, January 7, 2001, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas
after a five year valiant struggle birth bone marrow cancer. Steven Lee
Adair was born December 29, 1943, the second son of James A. (Jimmy) Adair and
Diane L. McParland Adair. He was a descendent of two pioneer Ellis County
families where his late father, a Waxahachie native, began his career in
professional baseball, which spanned fifty years. Steve started public
school education in the first grade class of Miss Ola Good in the old red
brick Carrollton Elementary School at the top of the hill on College Avenue. He
was a member of the last graduating class of Carrollton High School in 1962,
before the school was renamed R. L. Turner High School. He was an alumnus of the
University of Arizona, where he played baseball; Texas Christian University,
where he played baseball; Texas Christian University, where he played football
and the University of North Texas, where he received both bachelor's and
master's degrees. His career included coaching at the University of
Plano from 1970 until 1976; Southern Methodist University from 1976 until 1980;
First Baptist Academy, 1980 until 1987 and since that time at Trinity Christian
Academy in Addison. He was a pioneer in the youth baseball movement in the North
Texas area and was named The Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year in 1999 after
leading the Trinity team to its sixth state championship. He was also named the
American Armature Baseball Association's Coach of the Year in 1994. Steven was
an active member of the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Dallas, where he served on
the Board of Deacons and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is
the son of Diane L. Adair; brother of
Kent Adair; husband of Myra E. Adair; father of Stephanie Adair Byrd and Aaron
J. Adair and grandfather of Bryson Adair Byrd. The funeral service was conducted
Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, January 11th, at the Prestonwood Baptist Church.
Dr. Jack Graham and Rev. Ross Robinson presided. The committal service
was held that afternoon at 2 o'clock in Chapel East of
Hillcrest Mausoleum in
Dallas, with entombment following the family crypt. The casket was borne through
the cemetery in a horse drawn hearse preceded by Pipe Major Robert Richardson
playing "Amazing Grace", followed by the funeral cortege. The bearers of Mr.
Adair's casket were Matt Biermacher, Jamie Christian, Kyle Grant, Chase Gray,
Eric Pastore, David Purcey, Scott Rooker, and Mark Stratton. The honorary
bearers included a long list of former players, Sunday school class members and
long time friends. The family suggests that memorials be directed to
the Steven L. Adair Memorial Fund, in care of Comercia Bank, P.O. Box 650282,
Dallas, Texas 75265. The funeral was arranged and directed by his brother, W.
