OBITUARY Death Calls
Teacher Here For 40 Years.
Mrs. Fannie Allen Baskett, 71, of 2917 Douglas, veteran Dallas
school-teacher and wife of Albert S. Baskett, attorney, died Sunday at a local
hospital.
A native of Mansfield, La., Mrs. Baskett had been a resident of Dallas for the
last forty years, and had taught in public schools here for most of that time,
retiring in June 1942. At that time she was principal of the Clinton P.
Russell and Trinity Heights Elementary Schools, a position she had held for
fifteen years.
Taught at Uvalde.
Mrs. Basket first came to Texas in the 1890's to teach at Uvalde. She later
returned to Louisiana where she was married in 1899 to Mr. Baskett at Monroe,
La. Soon after their marriage they moved to Texas, and for a short time,
Mrs. Baskett operated a private school at her home in Hubbard City and then in
Hillsboro before they moved to Dallas in 1903.
In 1907 she joined the public school system here as a teacher and served in
capacity and as principal until her retirement in 1942. Before joining the
Dallas schools she also had taught in schools at Palestine, Farmers Branch and
other small towns over the state.
During the early years of Southern Methodist University Mrs. Baskett studied
there and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later took her
Master of Arts degree there. She also had done graduate work toward her
doctor's degree at Columbia University, Peabody and the Colorado State Teachers
College. At one time she taught in the SMU department of education at a summer
session.
Longtime Baptist.
Mrs. Baskett had been a member of the Highland Baptist Church since her arrival
in Dallas. She had joined the congregation when it was known as the
McKinney Avenue Baptist Church. She also was a life member of the Eastern
Star.
She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs.. Everett B. Parks and Mrs.
Martha E. Graham, Dallas; a son, Major John Lewis Baskett, San Antonio, and one
grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at the Guardian Funeral
Chapel with Dr. Julian Atwood, pastor of the Highland Baptist Church,
officiating. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.
