OBITUARY

Walter Edwin Berndt
(March 4, 1910 - April 22, 2012)

Walter Edwin Berndt was born March 04, 1910 in Stamford, Texas to Charles Henry and Lillie Koester Berndt. He passed away at his residence April 22, 2012 at the grand age of 102 years, 1 month and 18 days.

He lived on the Berndt family farm in Hebron, Texas since 7 years of age. The family attended the First Baptist Church of Hebron. As a young man Walter raised chickens, ran an egg route covering an extended area of Dallas and sold fresh vegetables during season. He also raised cows and sold milk and cream to Metzger's Dairy in south Dallas. He traveled to Chicago, and purchased radios to re-sell in the Dallas area. He and the Polser Boys hiked and climbed Pike's Peak. Walter spent his adult life as a farmer growing and harvesting cotton, corn, and wheat on the family land. In addition, he tilled and combined for neighboring farms. He also traveled to the North and South Dakotas and combined for other farmers during harvest time. Walter's elementary education began in Hebron and he graduated from Lewisville High School and went on to Texas Teachers College (now UNT) in Denton. He taught for a short time in a one room school house and then decided farming was a way of life for him. Walter's paternal grandfather was the first "wheelwright" west of the Mississippi River. His aunt Minnie Koester was the first female pony express mail carrier in the United States. Walter's grandparents arrived in Galveston, Texas from Germany in the 1800's on a sailing ship. His aunt was a casualty of the Hurricane of 1900 in Galveston. Walter married Annie Lou Little, the love of his life, in 1937. They were married 66 years when Annie Lou Little Berndt passed away April 5, 2004.

Walter is survived by his children Deanna Berndt Averett, Kathryn Berndt Westbrook and Walter Edwin Berndt Jr.; grandchildren Charles Michael Averett, Allison Westbrook LeClair, James Patrick Westbrook Jr., Lauren Kimble Berndt Weliver; great grandchildren, Chad, Gavin, Patrick, Jeremy, Natalie and Benjamin.
