CALHOUN - Fire Department employee for Carrollton for 28 years
Author: CHRISTY ROBINSON, Staff Writer
Services for Charles Curtis Calhoun, a retired Carrollton Fire Department
captain, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Aubrey,
Texas, 201 N. Cherry St., Aubrey.
Mr. Calhoun, 55, died Sunday from complications of diabetes at Denton Regional
Medical Center.
Mr. Calhoun was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Dallas. He graduated from R.L. Turner High
School in 1964 and attended Arlington State College, now the University of Texas
at Arlington. He joined the Carrollton Fire Department two years later.
In 1970, he married Elda Ramirez. They moved to Aubrey in 1976.
Mr. Calhoun retired as a captain from the department after 28 years of service
in December 1992. In his retirement, Mr. Calhoun enjoyed organic gardening and
raising longhorn cattle and appaloosa and paint horses on his land in Aubrey.
"As bad as [the diabetes] got, he never lost his sense of humor and still played
jokes on everybody," said his sister, Lillian Warren.
In addition to Ms. Warren of Kaufman, Mr. Calhoun is survived by his former
wife, Elda McCabe; daughters Dondria Hampton of Flower Mound, Annleia Briley of
Denton and Merisha Calhoun of Aubrey; brother, Marvin Calhoun of Trenton, Texas;
aunts Mary Cole and Jane Newland of Stigler, Okla.; and two grandchildren.
