OBITUARY J. C. Davis, Former Mayor of Carrollton, Dies at 81
CARROLLTON, Texas - J. C. Davis, 81, a former mayor of Carrollton and an
early Dallas County banker, merchant, auto dealer and financier, died Sunday in
his home here.
Born March 26, 1872, in Orange, Ga.; he came to Texas as a boy. He married the
former Miss Willie McCullough of Garland on Nov. 1?, 1897.
Davis and C. E. Hudson organized a chain of dry good stores in Garland. Then
Davis moved to Carrollton, where he founded the First State Bank. Later he was
the first Ford auto dealer in Dallas County with agencies in Carrollton and
Garland. Carl M. Brown of Garland was his partner.
Davis also was active in the Wichita Falls oil boom. In the last years of his
life, he dealt in real estate here.
He was mayor of Carrollton for six years during World War II. He was a member of
Carrollton's First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ralph Davis of Carrollton; two daughters,
Mrs. Zola May Kroeger of Harlingen, Cameron County, and Mrs. Dorothy Clem of
Paris Lamar County; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held here at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Christian
Church. The Rev. Norman Connor, the Rev. Leon Turner and the Rev. Herbert O.
Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Hilltop
Memorial Park.
