OBITUARY

GEORGE DIBB DENNIS JR
Birth Date: September 15, 1923
Death Date: September 12, 2016

George Dibb Dennis was a hard-working, universally-loved, adored family patriarch. He was born on September 15, 1923 and passed away September 12, 2016, just three days before his 93rd birthday. His status as the oldest native-born resident of Farmers Branch was one he proudly displayed through historical society interviews, local events and of course in his story-telling about growing up on the farm. Born in the Gilbert House (“Old Rock House”) on the site of the current Farmers Branch Historical Park, he was a proud resident of the community for 93 years. His mind remained a bank of names, dates and places of the early days of the then frontier-like North Texas area. Coming from a pioneer family that moved to Texas for farming, George grew up during the Great Depression – markedly maintaining the strength of character and values from this time throughout his entire life. His green thumb and love of farming transformed into gardening as a hobby, where he shared his native plant knowledge with his children and grandchildren. At age 19, he joined the Coast Guard after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served on various ships protecting the Gulf states. After the war, he went on to work for Mrs. Baird’s Bread Company where he pitched the idea to sell beyond groceries to restaurants – a division still intact in the DFW area today. He retired from Mrs. Baird’s after 30 years only to start a new career wth ADP for 15 years – earning him recognition for his work ethic and commitment to both. He was also one of the area’s most accomplished athletes and was the first freshman to ever letter in football at Carrolton High School – an accolade still visible in R.L. Turner High School trophy displays. This passion for sports stayed with him throughout his life, including playing baseball for the Coast Guard and later being a life-long fan of his favorite Dallas teams, the Texas Rangers and the Cowboys. George was the ultimate family man, being a dedicated husband for 48 years to his wife Kay until her death. He is survived by his three children – Vickie Barbara Dennis Pepperdine, David Lee Dennis and Kimberly Dennis Fulton, as well as his 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his long-time girlfriend and partner, Betty. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Howard Wayne Dennis, Maurine Dennis McKay, Claudine Dennis and Horace Dennis. He will forever be branded into the hearts and history of his family and beloved town. Friends are invited to join for the visitation held on Thursday, September 15th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, followed by the memorial services on Friday, September 16th at 2:00 pm. Both memorial and visitation will take place at Webb Chapel United Methodist Church, 2536 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch, TX 75234.
