Auto Hits Block Of Wood in Road, Smashup Kills 2

Early Morning Tragedy Occurs On Highway 77

Evelyn Ford 22, of Farmers Branch and her cousin H. D. Ogden, 33, of Carrollton, were injured fatally at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, when the car in which they were riding struck a block of wood, slithered out of control and rolled into a field on Highway 77 a mile north of Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Miss Ford, sister of Justice of the peace Perry Ford of Farmers Branch, died at 5:10 a.m. at St. Paul Hospital. Ogden died at 10:40 a.m. at St. Paul.
Maurine Sutherland, 20, of Farmers Branch who accompanied them on a trip to Dallas, was in St. Paul with an injury to her left arm, hip and shoulder. She is expected to recover.

Six Deaths in Five Days.
The two deaths came swiftly on the heels of announcement of plans by the County Commissioners' Court to start a deathless days safety drive outside the city limits as well as inside. While the city proper celebrated its 141st deathless day, the county had chalked up its sixth fatality in five days, a record in itself, but one written on the wrong side of the ledger.
The car involved in Sunday's accident was owned by Ogden but was being driven by Miss Ford, who was known among her friends as an excellent driver. Ogden, Miss Sutherland said, had remarked about his cousin's excellent driving a few minutes before the crash.
Investigators found the block of wood, the cause of the crash, several feet from the point where the car left the road. A piece of robber was nailed to the block, a type used as a packing wedge on heavy trucks, and it was believed to have fallen off one of the big trucks that rumble over Highway 77.

Carl Rolls Over and Over.
The three young people with others of their age had been visiting at the home of Mrs. Emmett Welch and Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Bulloch of Farmers Branch, and were returning from a brief trip to Dallas.
Miss Sutherland said the car lurched as it struck the block of wood and then turned over several times as she lost consciousness.
