OBITUARY Coauthor of Dallas History, Born in
County in '52, Dies
Mrs. Sophronia Frances Ford, widow of G. L. (Dutch) Ford, died Sunday at
the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. P. Brend, 2915 Reagan. She was 80 years old.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Brent; three sons, W. L. Ford and H. M.
Ford of Dallas, and Gus L. Ford of Lubbock and fifteen grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ford was the youngest daughter of
Isaac B. Webb and Mary Hughes Webb,
pioneer settlers of Dallas County, who built a home on Farmers Branch in 1844.
There Mrs. Ford was born Aug 23, 1852, and there she was married in January,
1874.
Isaac B. Webb established the first Methodist congregation in Dallas County,
holding services in his home prior tot he establishment of Webb Chapel on a
grand of land which he made for church purposes. Webb Chapel was later moved to
Farmers Branch, where it now stands.
Throughout her life Mrs. Ford was an active worker in the Methodist Church,
holding her membership in Oak Lawn congregation at time of her death. She was
well versed in early Texas history and collaborated with her cousin, the late
John H. Cochran, in the preparation of his history of Dallas County. She taught
one of the first public schools in Dallas County in a schoolhouse located near
the present Walnut Hill building. Her own school days were passed with a private
tutor and at Dallas Seminary, a finishing school.
Services will be conducted at Oak Lawn Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, by
Dr. Horace M. Whaling Jr. He will be assisted by the Rev. W. F. Bryan, the Rev.
C. W. Dennis and the Rev. O. S. Thomas. Burial will be in
Webb's Chapel
Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandnephews: Maynard L. Ford, Bill
Ford, Logan Ford, Gus Heilig, Warren Gravely, Robert Price Bent Jr., Wilton
Daniel and Jack Lively.
