OBITUARY

Dorothy (Nikki) Dell Godfrey
January 23, 1934 - September 7, 2018

Dorothy (Nikki) Dell Godfrey, (84) of Lewisville, Texas entered heavens gates on September 7, 2018. She was born on January 23, 1934 in Throckmorton, Texas. She was preceded in death by husbands, Windle Godfrey and Jack Godfrey as well as her sons Sam Sparks and Rick Sparks. Also preceded in death by her parents J.D. and Pearl Blanton, brother, L.E. McDonald, Sisters, Jeanette Bassinger, Mary Rogers, Ladonna Warnack and Glenda Tubbs.

She grew up in the Farmers Branch, Texas area and attended Carrollton Schools. In her Junior High School years she and her friend decided they no longer wanted to be called their given first name (in her case Dorothy) so they each picked a nickname. She chose Nikki and continued using it into adulthood. She always preferred it over Dorothy.

She was well known in the 1960’s for opening her own hair salon. It was called Nikki’s Hair Creations in Lewisville. She not only owned and operated the salon but she also was a stylist. Some of the classiest and well known ladies frequented the salon. It quickly became known as the salon where “miracles happened”. High School events like prom and homecoming always meant she would be very busy! Back then the stylists cut, colored and styled hair, did manicures, pedicures, facials and basically everything needed for women’s beauty. She loved her business and the customers she made beautiful.

She moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1969, where she was a homemaker and assisted her husband in running their construction business, G & G Builders. She remained there until 1992 when she moved back to Texas to be closer to family. She picked up her love of playing the slot machines in Vegas and when a casino was built only an hour from Lewisville she was so excited. She would always say she was going “up North” and everyone always knew what that meant.

She loved working in her yard and always worked hard every season in her rose garden. She loved fresh flowers and could not wait to get a beautiful bouquet from her garden. She became an avid reader loving fictional crime stories. It was nothing for her to read 2-3 books a week. She was a wonderful cook and loved to prepare meals for her daughter and her family. Her specialty was beef stew and coconut cream pie.

The light of her life was when her grandchildren were born. She never wanted to be called “grandmother”, “grandma” or anything close to that. So she decided her name would be “Nana”. She began with the oldest teaching him how to say it. After that all the other grand kids called her Nana. While she lived in Las Vegas each of them would take turns throughout the summer spending 2-3 weeks with her. She never missed a baseball game, school play, dance recital or anything else that involved her grandkids. She was the definition of what being a grandparent is all about and loved every minute of it. She became even more blessed when the great-grandchildren started arriving.

She treasured her friends and prided herself on her relationship with her neighbors, Sue and Maan Baz. They considered her family and treated her that way. They also liked to go “up North” and they loved spending time together. Yahtzee became their game of choice at home and they spent many hours playing it. Her best friend was Betty Nelson and they always enjoyed each other’s company. Going “out to eat” was a treat and an adventure for them. Margaret (Mag) Kelley was someone she considered a “sister” and while she had sisters of her own, she and Mag remained close friends for over 69 years.

She was a force in her family and will be missed for her kindness, love and ability to always see the bright side in everything.

Left to mourn her memory is her daughter, Judy Sparks Goodman, her son-in-law, Bill Goodman, grandchildren, Jarrod and Audrey Goodman, Caleb Goodman, Waylon and Whitney Goodman Grubbs. She was also great-grandmother to Tyler Grubbs, Sam Grubbs, Willow Grubbs, Georgia Goodman and Jayce Goodman.
