Rites set for Tuesday for former deputy sheriff William Gravley
Services for William Lee Gravley, a retired Dallas County
deputy sheriff, are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at
Restland Funeral Home & Memorial Park in Dallas.
Mr. Gravley, brother of Carrollton Mayor Milburn Gravley , died Saturday of complications from pneumonia at a nursing home in Tyler. He was 83.
Mr. Gravley worked as deputy sheriff for 25 years, retiring in 1974, said his daughter, Sarah Beth Braswell of Enchanted Oaks, Texas. Most of his work was as a jailer for Bill Decker, sheriff at the time of President John F. Kennedy's assassination, she said.
"He loved his job until the day he died," Mrs. Braswell said. "All he could talk about was being a deputy sheriff."
Mr. Gravley was born in Carrollton, where he lived until he moved to Cedar Creek in 1975.
"He was a very loving guy, very caring and a good family man," his brother said. "He was out of the old school."
Mr. Gravley also served in the Navy, receiving a medical discharge in 1944, his daughter said.
Mr. Gravley is also survived by his wife, Lucille Gravley of Tyler; two other brothers, Wilton Gravley of Farmers Branch and Joe Gravley of DeKalb, Texas; two sisters, Frances Price of Carrollton and Evelyn Jobe of Athens, Texas; another daughter, Cynthia Garvey of Keller; a son, Arthur Gravley of Colleyville; and 11 grandchildren
