OBITUARY HARRIS (Betty) LUCILLE KENEIPP HARRIS, mother, sister,
teacher, friend born October 2, 1918; died April 16, 2003. After a long
tenacious, but ultimately unsuccessful fight with the effects of West Nile
Virus, Betty Harris made the decision to terminate life supporting treatment.
She died as she lived, with extraordinary grace, with courage, compassion,
intelligence and dignity. She was the bright center of her family.
She will be sadly missed and warmly remembered by the many whose good fortune
has included knowing her.
Born to Alice Conway Cheeseman and Frederick Keneipp in Charleston, South
Carolina, she attended schools in Carrollton, Texas, received her Bachelors of
Arts degree from Texas Women's University in 1939, and after she began her long
teaching career, her Masters of Arts degree from Texas Women's University in
1939, and after she began her long teaching career, her Masters of Arts degree
from University of North Texas in 1966. Widely traveled and well-read,
Betty takes with her a prodigious knowledge of literature, history, ornithology,
botany, education, opera, art and nature. Betty was preceded in death by
her parents, her brother Jack Keneipp, and the love of her life and husband,
Claude Harris. She leaves behind her loving and beloved family, including
children John Werner and wife Nancy Caracas, Venezuela; Ann Werner, Miami Philip
Werner and wife Patricia Kerrigan, Houston; Mike Harris and wife Nancy Valdosta;
sisters Ursa Keneipp Pierce, Peggy Keneipp Roach and husband
George;
grandchildren Alexandra Teaff Soto and husband Abner Soto; James Teaff and wife
Carolina; Georgey Werner and wife Sandy; Roger Werner; Austin Werner; Stuart
Werner; nieces and nephews, Kate Sterly, Michael Pierce; Bill Eden; Sharon Eden
Savage and husband Pat Savage; Alice Levering and husband Mike; together with
innumerable dear friends. The family is deeply grateful to the many
healthcare providers who assisted Betty during her long illness, in particular ,
the nurses and staff at Kindred Hospital in Dallas, whose many kindnesses made
the long struggle easier to bear for their patient and those who loved her.
The family will receive visitors Saturday, April 19, 2003, from 10:00 am to 1:30
pm at Rhoton Funeral Home. A graveside ceremony will be celebrated
Saturday April 19 at 2:20 pm at Hilltop Memorial Cemetery in Carrollton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nature
