OBITUARY

Bessie May McRight, ex-teacher in Highland Park, dies at age 87

Bessie May McRight, a former teacher at Highland Park's Bradfield Elementary School, died Tuesday of complications from a stroke. She was 87.

Services were held Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Garland. Interment followed at the Perry Cemetery in Carrollton .

According to a niece, Melinda Anderson of Garland, Miss McRight's teaching career began long before her graduation from Southern Methodist University in 1933.

"She actually began teaching when she was 13," Mrs. Anderson said. "Aunt Bessie taught a pre-teen Sunday school class at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton . This led to her teaching career."

Miss McRight earned both a bachelor of science degree in education and a master's in education from SMU. She retired from Bradfield Elementary in 1976.

"She had a lot of patience when it came to her students," Mrs. Anderson said. "Parents were pleased when their children were placed in her class. She expected a lot from her students, and the parents appreciated that."
