OBITUARY

Services set for Billie Newman, 71, ex-Carrollton-Farmers Branch teacher

Services for retired teacher Billie Ross Lindsley Newman of Carrollton will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Restland Funeral Home in Dallas. Burial services will follow at Restland Memorial Park.

The former Carrollton-Farmers Branch schoolteacher died Friday at a nursing home. She was 71.

Ms. Newman left the district in 1990 after teaching there for 28 years. Before retiring she taught fourth grade at McLaughlin Neil Ray Elementary School.

She enjoyed teaching children that age because they were old enough to be somewhat independent but too young to be rebellious, according to her daughter, Kim Carrigan of Carrollton.

She said her mother had a special interest in all her children and even made visits to each student's home to better understand their individual situations.

"She tried to treat each one as she would want her children to be treated," Ms. Carrigan said.

In addition to her daughter, Ms. Newman is survived by sister Joyce Kornegay of El Dorado, Ark.; daughter Kay McMeans of Sulphur Springs; and four grandchildren.
