Neil Ray McLaughlin Elementary
Originally Webb Chapel Elementary, the school was constructed in 1959. The
name of the school was later changed after the death of its first principal,
Neil Ray McLaughlin, on
March 24, 1968. McLaughlin also served in the school district
as a teacher at Carrollton High School, assistant principal at
Vivian Field
Middle School, and principal at the old Farmers Branch Elementary School.

After nearly 60 years, Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD will say goodbye to one
if its elementary schools, McLaughlin Elementary.
The school was first constructed in 1959 and was originally named Webb
Chapel Elementary. After the death of its first principal, Neil Ray
McLaughlin, the school was renamed to McLaughlin Elementary in 1967.
“A lot of people just have positive memories of McLaughlin. They understand
that the building has aged, but they have memories and emotions attached to
attending that school,” said Angela Brown, C-FB ISD director of
communications.
Jon and Kaycie Mensing are two former students who share fond memories of
attending school. The two met at McLaughlin Elementary in the fifth grade.
Years later, they married. Both Jon and Kaycie recently revisited the campus
and spoke of their experiences in a video put together by the district.
“It looks a lot different and very much the same in some ways. I’m going to
be sad to see it go, that’s for sure,” Jon said in the video.
Kaycie shared memories of when she first met her husband and her initial
thoughts about him. The two also talked of their favorite teachers and what
they learned from them.
In 2008, Strickland Elementary was built across the street from McLaughlin
to accommodate the growth in the area. Both McLaughlin and Strickland served
the same attendance zone, and the district decided to split the campuses,
with McLaughlin serving pre-k through second grade and Strickland serving
third through fifth grade.
Brown said McLaughlin is beyond renovation. To better serve the students and
faculty, the district decided to move all of McLaughlin’s students over to
Strickland since the campus could accommodate all the students. The move is
also more cost effective, officials said.
According to the district, this is the last year classes will be held at the
building before it is demolished.
The students will begin the 2018-19 school year across the street in the
Strickland building. The school will continue to be called
McLaughlin-Strickland to honor both of the people who the schools were named
after.
“We will keep both names,” Brown said. “McLaughlin isn’t going away, it’s
just going to be called McLaughlin-Strickland Elementary.”
The district will be hosting a farewell event at the school on May 22.
Students, alumni and parents are welcome to attend.
The event begins with an open house followed by the opening of a 10-year old
time capsule. The night will end with a performance from the first- and
second-grade choir and an art show.
