Some 50 guests attended, including Mr. and Mrs. Noble, postal employees, their
wives and children.

Post Office.
Refreshments included cake and ice cream. The cake was decorated with the Postal

CARROLLTON RURAL MAIL CARRIER RETIRES AFTER 42 YEARS
A Carrollton rural letter carrier, William Henry Noble, retired on June 16
after 42 years and 8 months of service on the same job for the U. S. Postal
System.
What started out to be his first steady job after finishing school in
Carrollton, Mr. Noble hardly realized that he would be on the same Rural Route
No. 1 for so long a time.
It was back in Oct. 16, 1924 when he accepted the position to carry mail for
Uncle Sam on what is considered the oldest rural route in Texas. Noble stated
that route No. 1 was established before the turn of the century.
"Back in 1924 I used a Model T Ford for delivery, but the roads weren't too good
and when it got muddy, I rode a horse over the route," he said.
The route had 100 boxes on it, back in 1924 and now has 278.
Noble said W. L. Hoffman was postmaster when he was hired and the post office
was located at the northwest corner of the town square, now occupied by
Good Electric Supply.
Noble never changed jobs at the post office or rural routes. "It was good old
Route No. 1 all the way," he said.
He served under seven post-masters, which included four regular and three
temporary post-masters.
Upon his retirement, Noble received a certificate from Post-master General
Lawrence O'Brien commending him for his long years of service to the department.
He also was presented many services pins through the years.
The Nobles have one daughter, Mrs. Jimmie (Eileen) Hudnall of Morristown, N. J.
where the Nobles will be visiting this week.
"After that," he said "I guess I will spend some time fishing or do what ever my
wife says to do," he commented. It goes without saying that folks along
Carrollton way, and particularly along rural route No. 1, are wishing the Nobles
the best of everything. The Carrollton Chronicle - Thursday, June 29, 1967
