Staff Reports
Edward Lewis Russell, a longtime barber shop
operator in Old Downtown Carrollton, died April 19
at his home after a five-year battle with cancer. He
was 74.
He was born April 28, 1926, in Coppell. For 35
years, Mr. Russell owned Ed's Clip Joint on the
north side of the square where, as an informal
community tradition, many fathers had taken sons and
grandsons for their first haircuts.
He was a vocal advocate for Old Downtown, and he and
his tiny motorized car were a popular feature of
Carrollton parades for many years.
Former Carrollton Mayor
Milburn Gravley
, who once operated a family hardware store a few
doors away from Mr. Russell's barber shop, said Mr.
Russell was a caring man. "He cared about his
neighbors and about his neighbors in business,
especially those of us on the square," Mr. Gravley
said.
"Most of all he cared about his family. Seldom could
you go in his shop that Ed would not have a picture
to show or a story to share about someone in his
family.
"He was a good man to me and my family, and we will
miss him."
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Billie; a son
Eddie Russell of Plano; two daughters, Debbie Wilson
of Dallas and Kim Scott of Carrollton; a sister,
Juanita Hollis; seven grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday at Rhoton Funeral
Home in Carrollton, and burial was in Hilltop
Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul
Hospice.
