A native Dallasite, Ed graduated from Carrollton High School and Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves with two years active duty at USNAS Dallas, before beginning his 37 year professional banking career at Republic National Bank of Dallas in March 1955. Respected for his integrity, Ed served the bank as Director of Personnel and as a Vice-President and Manager of the Personal Trust Division, retiring in 1992, after Republic National Bank had become Nations Bank. He received a graduate degree from Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. Admired for his leadership, Ed served as President of the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, President of the Alumni Association of Southwestern University, and as a board member of the Visiting Nurses Association. A Christian and dedicated member of University Park United Methodist Church, Ed served as Chairman of the UPUMC Foundation, Head Usher, and Administrative Board Chairman. Ed loved his family and friends and enjoyed playing golf and watching all sports. A gracious gentleman, dignified, dependable, kind, considerate, and loving, with a sense of humor and thoughtful spirit, Ed blessed the lives of those he loved and those who loved him. We will miss his affirming words, genuine smile, bright eyes, firm handshake, strong hug, loving spirit, and faithful Christian example. A devoted husband and father, Ed is survived by his precious wife of 56 years, Betty Ann Clendenin Slaughter, daughter Pamela Bush and husband Philip, daughter Kathleen Chaney and husband Dan, and grandchildren Elizabeth and Emily Bush, and Will and Ben Chaney.
