OBITUARY CARROLLTON SADDENED BY SUDDEN DEATH OF
DEWEY SPENCER
The entire populace of Carrollton and the area was saddened by the sudden
death of Dewey Spencer, 52, prominent local citizen and civic leader. He died in
Mineral Wells following a heart attack while inspecting construction work at the
Wolters Air Force Base at that city. Spencer was a member of the firm of
Spencer, Glade, Oldt and Small, which is building the base.
Mr. Spencer was president of the Spencer Construction Co. Inc., of Carrollton.
He was born near Sarcoxie, Mo., and was educated in Joplin, Mo., public schools.
In 1918 he joined his father as a partner in James Spencer & Son Construction
Co. The company started with grade construction work near Joplin and expanded to
include state highway and railway grade work.
Contracts also were obtained for work in Arkansas; Kansas, Mississippi,
Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. Upon the death of his father, Spencer took over
the business and the name of the firm was changed to its present form.
During the war, he was engaged almost entirely in military construction.
He was a member of the Carrollton Lions Club, the Carrollton Chambers of
Commerce and the Associated General Contractors. He helped organize the
Carrollton State Bank and formerly was a director of the bank. He was a Mason
and a member of the First Christian Church of Carrollton.
Mr. Spencer served on the City Council from 1947-49.
Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p.m. in the First Methodist Church, the
Rev. Glendell A. Jones and Dr. John Stewart, officiating. Burial in charge of
Rhoton Funeral Home was in Restland Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife and a daughter, Mrs. W. M. Van Ness, both of Carrollton;
his mother, Mrs. Nena Sours, Denton, a grandson and a granddaughter.
