Vivian Field Middle School:
Vivian Field Middle School, built in 1960, is named in honor of
Mrs. Tom
(Vivian) Field. The Fields were active civic leaders in Farmers Branch for
many years. Mr. Field, a former county commissioner, donated land for the
first City Hall in Farmers Branch. Also a staunch supporter of public
education, he donated land for a new school, with the stipulation that the
school be named after his wife, Vivian.
History:
Vivian Field Junior High School opened for the fall term in September
1961. The school consisted of three levels of instruction, grades six
thru eight. Mrs. Thelma Runyon, the nurse and attendance officer for
the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District, related that she
had approached Mr. Tom Field on behalf of the newly established
Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District to donate land in Farmers Branch
for a second Junior High School for the district. After due
consideration Mr. Field agreed to donate 7.5 acres, a part of the family
land on Dennis Road and Richland street, to build the school, provided it be
named for his wife, Mrs. Vivian Field.
The building consisted of three wings connected by a gymnasium on the
southeast side and a cafeteria and kitchen facilities on the west side of
the building. In 1969 an additional wing was built on the east side
providing a formal entrance, offices and additional classrooms. The
latest addition to Vivian Field was completed in time to accommodate sixth
grade classes for the start of the 1992-93 year.
The name of the school has now been changed to Vivian Field Middle School to
reflect the grade levels and programs provided there. Since the school
opened there have been five principals; Mr. O.K. Edmondson, Mr. Kenneth
McKinney, Mr. Gilbert Thompson, Ms. Martha Stone, and Mr. Conan Reinken, the
first principal.
