Remembering When: Memories of Carrollton

Sara Salmon wasn’t born in Carrollton, but she has lived there 80 years.

Her family moved to the town when Salmon was a year old.

She and her husband, G. A., graduated from Carrollton High School in the same year and were married in a Carrollton church. Her two children are both R. L. Turner High School graduates; she also has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

What are some of your memories of growing up [in Carrollton]?

We were always active in the community. The football field was an open field behind the red brick school building. There were no stands to sit on. We parked our cars around the field. On Friday nights, the stores around the square closed and everyone went to the game. The town was small, and you knew everyone. We had no mail delivery. You saw your friends (and learned all the gossip) at the Post Office when you went to get your mail.

What are some of the things you would do for fun in Carrollton?

Everyone gathered on the square, went to the movies or the “End of Road Café”. We had plays at the school and you did not miss any sports activity. We had parties in the homes. The school parties were really a big deal and all students went.

What, to you, are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the city?

The biggest change to me was when things started moving north, away from the square. With this new growth came fast food, housing developments, grocery chains, and service stations. … People started locking doors. You did not know all your neighbors.

Why have you chosen to live [in Carrollton] for so many years?
My husband was in the Air Force for three years. When he was discharged, there was not a question of where we were going to live. We came home to Carrollton. This will always be home. We loved our church, schools, city, family and friends. I still do volunteer work with the city of Carrollton. This is home.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I would love to see the city change more with hotels, meeting places, nice restaurants and more industries for taxes and jobs.

SARA (GUYNES) SALMON
August 10, 1929 - November 3, 2018

Salmon, Sara (Guynes)
Sara Salmon, 89, passed away on Saturday November 3, 2018. Memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Carrollton Wednesday November 7th at 2:00 p.m. There will be a visitation Tuesday November 6th from 5:00 – 7:00 at the North Dallas Funeral Home. A private burial service for the family will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Carrollton in lieu of flowers.

Sara was born August 10, 1929, in Rinehart, Texas, [Reinhardt Texas] to parents Johnnie and Pauline Guynes. She met her beloved G.A. in 1943 while they both attended Carrollton High School. After graduation, they married in 1946 and spent the next 72 years together. The story of Sara and G.A. is a love story that played out year after year in a loving unconditional devotion to each other.

Sara is survived by her husband G.A., son Ron Salmon and wife Shirley, daughter Vickie McLauchlan and husband Stewart, grandchildren Anne Badger and husband Brent, Steve Salmon and wife Juanita, Jenni Gundersen and husband Herb, Jaime Anderson, and great grandchildren Devin Gundersen, Maddie Gundersen, James Badger, John Badger, Casen Badger, Gracie Salmon, and Jayden Anderson.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Julius Guynes, Leon Guynes, Bennett Guynes, and Paul Guynes.

Sara never joined an organization to be a passive member and diligently served these groups. She had a love for the women’s club and was a member of the Lake Dallas Women’s Club, Cedar Creek Lake Women’s Club, and a long-time member of the Carrollton Women’s Club. While at the Carrollton Club she was an avid supporter of the annual fundraising women’s fashion show and served in numerous officer roles including president of the club.

Sara was also an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She again served in numerous officer roles including president.

She was a member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church for 55 years where she faithfully served in many capacities. During the past few years, she loved attending her Sunday School Class where she and G.A. enjoyed the fellowship of many dear life-long friends.

As a long-time resident of Carrollton, Sara also served in several appointed civic positions. She was particularly active in the Carrollton Historical Society. She was also active in the local and city level PTA fulfilling numerous officer roles including that of president. She was also president at the District PTA level.

As a result of her services to these organizations, in 2007 Sara received the “Community Builder Award” from the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas for her services as a volunteer for the Carrollton Farmers Branch community.

Despite these many organizations in which she served, she also had a career as an accountant. She worked for A.W. Cullum (Tom Thumb) for many years. She retired from A.W. Cullum for a for a few years and then interviewed for a position at Standard Pipe. She gave A.W. Cullum as a reference when interviewing. The reference came back, “Sara was one of the best employees we ever had, but you should know her family comes first.” She was immediately hired and told that a person could not have a better reference. Despite all of Sara’s accomplishments, her family would always come first.

Sara Salmon had a life well lived. She served her God, her family, her church, her employers, her city, and her organizations in a godly, unselfish, dedicated manner. We will honor her by remembering this loving lady.
