Noel Lester Smith
July 7, 1926 - June 28, 2008Noel Lester Smith, of Austin, died
peacefully in his home on June 28, 2008. Loving family and his wife of sixty
years, Mary Lee Smith, surrounded him. He was born to Isaac Russell and Grace
Smith on July 7, 1926, in Dallas, Texas.
As a young man, Noel was often prone to pranks and general mischief making, but
all that changed after attending a local church service. At the age of 16,
Noel dedicated his life to Christ. A few years later, he joined the U.S. Navy
and served his county in World War II. On June 1, 1947, he married the love of
his life, Mary Lee Grimm.
Noel and his family moved to Garland, Texas, where he became a member of Miller
Road Baptist Church and six years later joined Lavon Drive Baptist Church.
During a span of over four decades, Noel served as a church deacon, usher and
Sunday school teacher. Four years ago, Noel and Mary Lee moved to Austin Texas,
and joined the Maranatha Baptist Church. Gaylord Container Corporation in
Dallas, Texas, employed Noel for forty-five years.
Noel is survived by his wife, Mary Lee; his three children, Jeannie Kelley and
her husband, Daniel Laufer, of Austin, Texas, Kenneth Smith and wife, Pan, of
Linden, Texas and Randy Smith and wife, Sonya, of Garland, Texas; four
grandchildren, Larry Isham, of College Station, Texas, Jeff Kelley, of Austin,
Texas, Wendy Chavez, of Plano, Texas, and Misty Castro, of Mesquite, Texas; nine
great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Virgil Smith and wife, Dorothy, of
Howell, New Jersey, and Douglas Smith and wife, Betty, of Angleton, Texas. |
