He was born March 22, 1923 in Trinity Mills, Texas, ninth of ten
children to Edgar Pleasant Mayes and
Louise Duwe Mayes. He was a
graduate of Carrollton High School.
Mr. Mayes is survived by son Michael and his wife Debbi, their children

Greg, and her sons Chris and Matt and Chris’ wife Nicole, and daughter
Susan. He is also survived by brother Edgar D. Mayes, sisters Merle Isom
and Regina Stephens, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In 1948 he and Alma Kerr of Carrollton began their 60 years of married
life together. They raised four children on their Midlothian farm/ranch.
He began his love of farming and ranching as a boy for his parents and
neighbors. Upon returning home from Europe after World War II, he put
his savings into purchasing the Midlothian farm. He and Alma worked
night and day to establish a dairy, later a chicken farm and then a
lucrative BeefMaster cattle ranch. While running his dairy he also held
a full time job with Security Engineering in Dallas. He retired as a
machinist from TXI Cement Plant in Midlothian.
He and Alma contacted the rural communities of Midlothian and Sardis to
help establish the Sardis-Lone Elm community water supply. He served as
its president for almost 20 years/a Board Member for 40 years.
A highlight of his later years was his Honor Flight trip to Washington
D.C. with Ellis Country World War II Veterans. He was a US ARMY AIR CORP
Veteran of World War II. As a machinist at North American Aviation,
Dallas, Texas, he helped build the P-51 Mustang fighter planes; he
helped build them, saw them in action and assessed battle damage. He
served as Supply Staff Sergeant with the 8th Air Force in England for 2
years and Quarter Master Supply Tech Sergeant in Germany.
He was dedicated to family, his nation and his love for the Lord. He
loved working with his cattle and land. He was a member of First Baptist
