OBITUARY
Ed
Mayes was born July 5, 1915, in Round Grove, Texas, in Denton County, the son of
Louise (Duwe) and Edgar P. Mayes. He passed from this life on January 26, 2015,
at age 99. Ed was one of 10 children, four boys and six girls. The family moved
from the Round Grove community to the farming community of Trinity Mills, where
they continued farming and raising their family. Ed graduated from Carrollton
High School where he was very active in football, basketball, and baseball.
After graduation, he entered North Texas Agricultural College, now the
University of Texas at Arlington. He also attended North Texas State Teachers
College, now The University of North Texas in Denton. His main interests
remained in sports at both colleges and he especially excelled in throwing the
javelin. He set a record, at that time, with a throw of 192' and 8" at NTAC and
went on to participate in javelin at the Border Olympics and the Savage Relays
in Oklahoma.
In 1938, he accepted a job with American National Insurance Company in Dallas.
He married Louis Reese on June 26, 1942, and continued working at American
National Insurance until he was inducted into the U. S. Army in 1943. He was
stationed at Love Field in Dallas, where he continued his love of sports and was
on the Army baseball team. He was transferred to a base in Long Beach,
California, then to Herington Army Airfield in Kansas, and his last months of
service were spent in Washington, D.C. before being discharged in 1946. He
returned to Dallas and resumed his career at American National, retiring in 1978
as District Manager after 40 years with the company.
Ed's wife, Louis Mayes, passed away in 1975. In 1978 he married Frances Fowler
who also preceded him in death, in 2006.
Ed became Christian early in his life and was always active in his church. He as
a longtime member of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, and has been a member
of Duncanville's First Baptist Church for the past 25 years. He also volunteered
at Charlton Methodist Hospital for many years.
Ed is also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters.
He is survived by sisters, Merle Isom and Regina Stephens; step-children, Warren
Fowler and Linda Stauffer; and numerous loving nieces, nephews,
step-grandchildren, and friends. Funeral services are 11:00 am, Thursday,
January 29, 2015, at Jaynes. Visitation begins at 10:00 am, one hour prior to
the service. Burial will be Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas, at 1:30
pm. |
