OBITUARY
CHRISTINE
MAYES
WALLACE
Spent nearly 40
years teaching
third-graders
Christine
Mayes Wallace
devoted her
nearly 40-year
teaching career
to third-grade
students, the
age when she
felt she could
make the most
difference in
their young
lives.
Mrs.
Wallace, 96,
died Friday of
natural causes
at Meadows
Nursing Home.
Services were
Tuesday at Park
Cities Baptist
Church, where
she had been an
active member
for 62 years.
Mrs.
Wallace felt the
third grade was
the pivotal
year, said her
son, William
Mayes "Bill"
Wallace of
Plano.
Mrs. Wallace
had been quoted
as saying a
classroom is
four walls and a
roof with the
future inside,
her son said.
"She
taught three
generations of
kids," her son
said. Mrs.
Wallace had
former students
who brought
their children
and
grandchildren to
visit her in the
nursing home,
her son said.
Born in
Lewisville, Mrs.
Wallace was one
of 10 children
in her family
who grew up on a
farm in
Carrollton near
what is now
Interstate 35E
and Trinity
Mills Road.
In 1937,
Mrs. Wallace
earned a
bachelor's
degree from
Texas State
College for
Women, now Texas
Woman's
University. In
1964, she earned
a master's
degree in
education from
what is now the
University of
North Texas.
Mrs. Wallace
began teaching
in Carrollton -
where two of her
sisters were
already teaching
- while she was
a college
undergraduate.
"My
grandfather told
the school board
superintendent,
'Get Christine
back from
college,' and
'that she'd make
a good
teacher,'" her
son said. "She
started teaching
in 1931."
In
Carrollton, Mrs.
Wallace's
students
included a
younger sister
and a cousin,
Tom Vandergriff,
whose public
service career
would include
being the
longtime mayor
of Arlington,
U.S. congressman
and Tarrant
County judge.
Mrs.
Wallace taught
for 13 years in
Carrollton.
"At the
visitation
Monday night,
there were
people there she
had taught who
called her Ms.
Mayes," her son
said of her
former
Carrollton
students.
In 1943,
Mrs. Wallace
married William
Morris Wallace.
Mr. Wallace died
in October 1972.
During World
War II, Mrs.
Wallace worked
for the Highland
Park Draft
Board, her son
said.
In 1945,
the couple moved
to University
Park, where she
resumed her
teaching career
at University
Park Elementary
School in the
mid-1950s.
She was twice
named teacher of
the year by the
Highland Park
Independent
School District.
She retired in
1979.
Mrs.
Wallace also
taught Sunday
school at Park
Cities Baptist
Church for more
than 40 years,
her son said.
In addition
to her son, Mrs.
Wallace is
survived by
three sisters,
Cora Mayes Cerniak of
Garland and
Merle Mayes Isom
and Regina Mayes
Stephens, both
of Dallas; three
brothers,
Edgar
D. Mayes of
Duncanville,
Frederick W.
"Ted" Mayes of
Lewisville and
Jack H. Mayes of
Midlothian, and
five
grandchildren.
Memorials
may be made to
the building
fund campaign at
Ronald McDonald
House of Dallas,
5641 Medical
Center Drive,
Dallas, Texas
75235.
